A Holistic Approach To Saddle Biomechanics
Saddle fitting is a detailed process that accounts for multiple interfaces: saddle to horse, rider to saddle, and girth to horse. At Mayfield Saddlery, we also consider the intended use—whether dressage, jumping, or general riding—which directly affects saddle design. Each assessment is guided by a biomechanical understanding of movement, balance, and performance, ensuring the saddle supports both horse and rider comfortably and correctly through all riding activities.

Movement Analysis And Performance Testing
Our biomechanical fitting process begins with an initial check on a hard, flat surface to assess natural movement. We then observe the horse performing in a ménage—first without tack, then with the saddle, and finally with both saddle and rider.
We consider rider shape, size, and ability, and monitor the effect of different girths throughout. We also work with pressure monitoring pads to identify pressure points and ensure every fitting supports the horse’s well-being and performance.
Girth Fit, Saddle Pads, And Ongoing Adjustability
Girths play a key role in biomechanics. Poorly fitting girths can restrict front-leg movement, especially in jump or event horses.
We stock specialist girths designed to improve freedom and reduce restriction. We also advise on the use of numnahs or gel pads to assist saddle fit—particularly for horses that change shape.
Where needed, we recommend adjustable saddles with interchangeable gullet plates, allowing long-term flexibility as the horse develops and changes condition.
Research-Driven Saddle Fitting Practice
Our approach is based on the latest research and real-world experience. Our fitters follow published studies and also conduct in-house research to continually improve outcomes. We aim to maximise comfort and performance by fine-tuning the horse, saddle, girth, and rider interface. We carry a wide range of saddles, girths, and numnahs to every appointment, ensuring the right combination is available on-site. This forward-thinking approach helps avoid injury, discomfort, and performance issues over time.
